Executive selection criteria

Selection criteria that get you in front of the panel.

Senior roles in government, health, education and the not-for-profit sector are won on paper first. Your coach writes the pitch, statement of claims or criteria responses that show the panel you already operate at the level they're appointing to.

Where it's used

Wherever the panel scores you against a framework.

Commonwealth

SES and Executive Level roles

Applications for Senior Executive Service and Executive Level roles in the Australian Public Service, written to the leadership capabilities the panel will assess.

State and local government

Director, executive director and CEO

Senior roles assessed against a state capability framework or key selection criteria, from director and executive director to deputy secretary and council CEO.

Health, education and not-for-profit

Senior and board appointments

Universities, health services, statutory bodies and not-for-profit organisations that ask for a written response to selection criteria or a capability statement.

How we write it

Evidence the panel can score.

01

A conversation first

Your Executive Transition Coach starts with a consultation to draw out the examples that best match the role. Nothing is written from a form.

02

The role, then the framework

We work from the position description, the advertisement and the capability framework behind them, so every response answers what the panel is actually scoring.

03

Examples at the right level

Each claim is backed by a specific example of what you did, how you did it and the result, pitched at the scope and complexity of the role you're applying for.

04

Within the limits

Word counts, page limits and formats are followed exactly. A response that ignores the instructions can be marked down before its content is read.

05

One story across the application

Your responses and your resume draw on the same evidence and the same narrative, so the panel sees one consistent candidate.

06

Ready for the interview

The examples we develop on paper become the stories you tell at interview, so you walk in already prepared.

What we write

The response the application asks for.

Pitch or statement of claims

A concise statement that makes your case against the role as a whole, written to the length the application sets.

Selection criteria responses

A separate, evidence-based response to each criterion or capability, in the format the panel asks for.

Targeted questions

Short answers to the specific questions some applications use in place of full criteria.

Refined with your coach

Revised with you until it's right, and delivered in Word and PDF before your closing date.

Add what you need

An executive resume, cover letter or interview coaching, built on the same evidence.

Questions

Before you get in touch.

What's the difference between a pitch and selection criteria responses?

A pitch is a single statement, often one to two pages, that makes your case against the role as a whole. Selection criteria responses address each criterion separately. The application will say which it wants, and we write to that format.

Can you write to a specific capability framework?

Yes. We write to the framework named in the application, whether it's a Commonwealth, state or organisation's own framework.

Do I need a new resume as well?

Not always. If your resume already supports your claims, we'll focus on the responses. If it tells a different story, we'll recommend aligning it.

The closing date is soon. Can you help?

Tell us the closing date when you get in touch, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can meet it.

Can you help with the interview too?

Yes. Executive interview coaching can be added, delivered by video, and built on the examples in your application.
